History

The first Christian Learning Center class was held in August, 2004, with 16 students.  The original teacher was Dr. Keith Harrill, Minister of Education at Calvary Baptist Church.

The genesis of CLC began some five years prior to this in the heart of Dr. Mike Gay, Pastor at Greenwood Baptist Church.  God placed a burden on Mike’s heart about the need to teach the Bible to public school students.  After much prayer in seeking god’s will, Mike approached Henry Simmons, Director of Missions for the Florence Baptist association, about the possibility of beginning a release time ministry with the assistance of the association.

In 2002, an effort was begun to put together a CLC Administrative Board to help oversee the ministry of the Christian Learning Center.  After a couple of false starts, due to some scheduling difficulties, CLC was officially launched in August, 2004, with Southside Middle School students.

The following semester, 2 classes were offered with a total of 15 students.  During the second semester of 2007, a class was offered to students at Sneed Middle School.  At the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year, classes were added for middle school students at Williams and Hannah-Pamplico in Florence School District 2.

Currently, there are fourteen classes offered – four at Abundant Life Church for Southside students; four at Ebenezer Baptist Church for Sneed students; three at the New Life Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ for Williams students; and, three classes at Mt. Zion Baptist church for Hannah-Pamplico students.  The administrative board is grateful to these churches for the use of their facilities to teach these students the Bible. It is estimated that in the last two years, more than 1,600 students have been through the program, many of them leaving with a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
